Website on relief effort in Indonesia
January 26, 2005 - United Nations Media Center for Tsunami Disaster maintains a website on relief efforts in Indonesia. It also includes information on education projects in the devastated regions. The aim is to provide schooling to 60,000 children and appropriate learning facilities, materials and training in psychosocial support for teachers. More

Tsunami destroys hundreds of schools
January 14, 2005 - (UNESCO) Teachers unions estimate that over 75,000 teachers have been affected by the tsunami. 'It is going to take possibly months to get a true picture of the destruction in the education sector especially in the far flung islands in Indonesia which till today have not been reached by government or humanitarian aid organizations," comments the Chief Regional Coordinator in Asia of Education International, Aloysius Mathews. UN launches $27 million flash appeal for education after Tsunami
January 7, 2005 - (UNESCO) Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today launched a $977 million flash appeal for emergency aid to tsunami victims. Some $27 million are needed for reestablishing education in Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Seychelles, Somalia and Sri Lanka. This amount will cover the critical work of some forty UN agencies and NGOs from January to the end of June 2005. More

Reestablishing schooling in South Asia
January 3, 2005 - UNESCO "We must ensure that there is no interruption in schooling,” says UNESCO's Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura following the tsunami that last week ravaged eight Indian Ocean countries. UNESCO's Education Sector is mobilizing all of its partners to bring swift psychological and pedagogical support to young people, and to establish structures that will allow the school programme to continue until schools are rebuilt.
