Regional Centres of Expertise
The Education for Sustainable Development (EfSD) Programme considers the promotion of regional centres of expertise as one of its key activities. EfSD is engaged in action and research to facilitate the development of the key concepts of regional centres of excellence, a global learning space, and other relevant concepts as well as developing research activities which help in the understanding of the institutional conditions for the establishment of regional centres of expertise.
Regional centres of expertise are thought of as institutional spaces that are designed in order to strengthen the collaboration between educational, research institutions and other regional actors. It could take a form of a network or a centre, etc. While potentially varying in size and affiliations as well as dealing with different areas constituting the subjects of EfSD, regional centres of expertise should be able to satisfy the key requirements of addressing four major gaps:
- between the challenges facing region and science and education;
- between the science, in a broadest sense of a word, and education;
- between formal and non-formal education;
- between different levels of education, ie. primary, secondary, and higher education.
Regional centres of expertise will serve as a basis for curriculum development, educational capacity development and support for curriculum coordination at different levels and facilitate links between science, research, educational institutions, policy makers, and industrial organisations, etc.
