The International Implementation Scheme for the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development was approved at the UNESCO Executive Board September session.

At the 171st session of the UNESCO Executive Board in April 2005, the Board asked that the draft International Implementation Scheme (IIS) be consolidated into a shorter form providing more of a strategic focus on the implementation of the Decade. This consolidated draft was discussed and approved at the UNESCO Executive Board session in September 2005.

The IIS sets out a broad framework for all partners to contribute to the Decade. It is not prescriptive, but provides overall guidance and shows why, how, when and where the enormous range of partners can develop their contributions based on their particular contexts. It briefly presents the ESD challenge and outlines the kind of education that, collectively, partners consider essential in order to facilitate sustainable development.
