 Home --- International Clearinghouse on Curriculum for HIV/AIDS Preventive Education

The International Clearinghouse on Curriculum for HIV/AIDS Preventive Education aims to be a valuable and interactive resource tool for the prevention and mitigation of HIV/AIDS through education.

It is directed primarily at professionals working in the area of curriculum design, implementation and evaluation for the prevention and mitigation of HIV/AIDS at national, regional and international levels. Other education specialists, especially teachers and researchers, will however also find information relevant to their practice.

The main objectives of the International Clearinghouse are to:

  • collect, assess and proactively disseminate curriculum materials and approaches for HIV/AIDS prevention at primary and secondary levels of schooling;
  • assist in the identification and promotion of good practice;
  • contribute to capacity building for HIV/AIDS curriculum development.

The IBE International Clearinghouse is centred on the Global Curriculum Bank for HIV/AIDS Preventive Education, a bibliographic database of international curriculum materials and related documentation for HIV/AIDS education at primary and secondary levels of schooling.

Materials handled by the Global Curriculum Bank include:
  • Curriculum documents (frameworks, plans, sillabi) for use in schools and teacher training institutes;
  • Teaching materials and teaching aids (including a range of media formats);
  • Studies and research related to curriculum development, implementation and evaluation;
  • Descriptions/ case studies of good practice of HIV/AIDS curriculum related material.

As far as possible, efforts are made to disseminate the full texts of documents online, to make links to existing digital publications or to provide detailed order information. Data from the HIV/AIDS education curriculum bank will also be made available in printed format and CD-ROM for institutions that do not have easy access to the Internet.

The initiative is part of UNESCO’s integrated programme to provide relevant targeted information to those working to combat HIV/AIDS through education. It complements a number of other UNESCO Clearinghouses and databases:

  • The HIV/AIDS Impact on Education Clearinghouse (International Institute for Educational Planning) collects and disseminates documentation and research focusing on the impact of the epidemic on education systems.

  • The HIV/AIDS Database (part of UNESCO Bangkok Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health website) displays educational materials on HIV/AIDS/STDs, used either in the formal or non-formal sectors and mainly produced in Asia/Pacific region.

  • The Database on HIV/AIDS Preventive Education (part of UNESCO BREDA Preventive Education Programme) promotes and supports efforts and initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa to combat HIV/AIDS through formal and non-formal education.

  • The HIV/AIDS and Education Database (UNESCO Harare) addresses informational needs of governmental and non-governmental organizations, teachers, teacher associations and other individuals working in the field of HIV/AIDS and Education in Eastern and Southern Africa.
