TVET and Countries in Post-Conflict Situations
Numerous countries from around the world are currently experiencing situations of conflict or are reeling from the lingering effects of past conflict which typically manifest as: poor economic and political performance and stability, poverty, hunger, homelessness, crippled infrastructure, skill shortages and decreased access to education and training. |
Since 1945 we have seen 150 conflicts erupt throughout the five continents, resulting in 20 million deaths and 60 million casualties. In the First World War, civilians accounted for 5% of the victims. That figure has now risen to 80 per cent or even 90 per cent, half of these being children.
In addition more than 20 million refugees and 30 million displaced persons are today living in the most precarious of circumstances, and at least 60% of their number are children.
The establishment of peace in conflict areas is often a fragile one. Rapid reconstruction of the region and rehabilitation of the affected population is of ultimate importance if peace is to be maintained. Technical and vocational education and training (TVET) is particularly effective in quickly instilling people with the skills necessary for establishing non-violent livelihoods and peace building.
