  ARAB STATES
UNESCO works in the fields of school rehabilitation and construction, furniture production and provision of educational materials and equipment for all levels of education, in countries all over the world.

UNESCO has gained considerable experience working in countries where conflict has severely disrupted educational services and facilities.

This action must not only meet immediate educational needs but also, whenever possible, help to ease the transition phase following the wars which have destabilized, disorganized or even destroyed the education system.

UNESCO step up its action in this field in co-operation with the other organizations in the United Nations system, non-governmental organizations and other UNESCO partners in the field.

Lebanon
During the Lebanese civil war and following the conflict a series of workshops and training programmes in conflict resolution, mediation, human rights, peace education were launched by the International Peace Research Association (IPRA) in cooperation with UNESCO.

Palestinian Authority
Since the policy of reoccupation of the Territory and a strict closing of borders imposed by Israel for security reasons (division of territories in 50 isolated enclaves), the Palestinian population is experiencing an aggravated humanitarian crisis : mobility more than reduced, impossibility to have access to the most basic services. The present economic and social crisis only aggravates this tragic situation and makes the peace negociations more difficult.

Education in the Arab States: Five million girls still denied access to school
The report covers the 1999/2000 school year and consequently does not take into account the damage to education systems resulting from the conflicts in the Palestinian Autonomous Territories and Iraq, both of which, the report found, had reported relatively high levels of participation in schooling. - Website (URL)
