Host and partner institution: the Instituto Sacatar runs a residency programme on the island of Itaparica in Bahia, Brazil. Sacatar provides room, board and studio space to a selected international group of creative individuals at its beautiful beach-side estate, the former retreat of a Catholic girls’ school.
Working/living conditions: private bedrooms and bathrooms, studio space, simple wood-working shop, small library. Sacatar can arrange opportunities to work with local artists, craftspersons, school children or young adults. Please note that few community members speak English and Sacatar does not provide translators.
Nature of bursary: return ticket, accommodation, meals, studio and US$200/month stipend for incidental local expenses during the residency. The laureate must provide his/her own health insurance.
Dates of residency: to be fixed by mutual agreement between September 2006 and February 2008.
Eligibility: accomplished visual artists from Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Australia or the Pacific Islands. Working knowledge of English or Portuguese required. Selection of applicants will be based on talent, professional experience, testimonials and work proposal. (Apart from this programme, creative individuals from other regions of the world and/or in other artistic disciplines may also apply, following the separate application procedures posted on the Sacatar website www.sacatar.org .)

- a curriculum vitae
- two testimonials for the programme in Brazil
- a work proposal (please note that once in Bahia your proposal may change)
- 12 thin-framed slides of recent work
- a suitably-sized self-addressed envelope, if you wish to have your materials returned
