The Embassy of Haiti in Washington is pleased to announce the opening of "Waters of Memories" by Inêz Oludé da Silva. The exhibition opens August 21, 2009 and presents 11 works in mix media by Inêz Oludé da Silva, a Brazilian artist of Afro descent who currently lives in Belgium.
Using collaged historical documents and painting, Ms. Inêz Oludé da Silva reveals a new dimension to the human tragedy that was the traffic of slaves. Through her paintings, we accompany the slaves on their forced journey to a new world. Her artistic sensitivity is underlined by her suggestive strokes, and the use of shadows; thus, a troubled world unfolds before our eyes.
In a 2004 speech, UNESCO General Director, Mr. M. Koïchiro Matsuura, praised Ms. Oludé da Silva “whose style reveals a profound dimension of the tragedy of the slave trade. I encourage you all to visit this exhibition for a veritable journey into the history of the slave trade, which undoubtedly will foster awareness of the importance of our duty to remember.”
Ms. Oludé da Silva has exposed internationally. She is the director of the Brazilian Arts Biennale in Brussels and a member of the Conseil National des Arts Plastiques (CNAP-AIAP-UNESCO). She is enrolled at the Académie Royale de Boisfort, Belgium, and focuses on Public Art.
