USA grant supports UNESCO Cultural Heritage Laws Database

The United States of America has renewed its Funds-in-Trust contribution to UNESCO to continue to support the "Development of UNESCO Cultural Heritage Laws Database" in 2008 and 2009.

Launched in 2005, this online database features cultural heritage laws from UNESCO Member States. It offers free access to national legislations through an easy-to-use Website: www.unesco.org/culture/natlaws. To date, 1148 legislations from 126 countries are online.

Relevant legislations can be consulted in their original language and in official English translations. The online Database attracts law-makers, lawyers, police and customs officers, art and antiquities dealers, students and researchers as well as private individuals, who can consult the laws and regulations related to importation, exportation and ownership of cultural goods.

The US grant is also supporting the development of an action plan for upgrading and promoting the Database.
