Teaching theatre in Greece: a historical and institutional appreciation of the 20th century.

The history of school theatre in Greece starts from the Jesuit colleges of the Cycladian Islands in the 18th century. The constitutional changes, though, were established and documented in the beginning of the 20th century, as a result of educational development of the time. In Greece, thewatre teaching went through several stages which reflected the political claim of the era, and has been used as a good means to enrich the national or nationalistic identity. From the time of the ‘school theatre’ on the national celebrations to the educational changes that have happened since the late ‘90s, the profile of theatre education has had a very interesting history that explains a lot of aesthetic and idealistic tendencies of the adult theatre in Greece as well. The lecture discusses the stages, the goals and the methods of theatre in education for the latest 100 years in Greece.
