WH News Deadline for submissions of entries for UNESCO Heritage Awards
23 Feb 2004 - Entries for the 2004 Awards must be submitted in the format of the official entry form with drawings, photographs and written description. Entries must be received by the UNESCO Bangkok office by 31 March 2004.

WH News The First Unesco World Heritage Stand at ITB
05 Feb 2004 - As part of its tourism programme, UNESCO World Heritage Centre will host its first stand ever at the International Tourism Exchange (ITB), the world’s largest travel and tourism trade fair, which will be held in Berlin, Germany from 12–16 March 2004. UNESCO has hosted workshops at ITB every year since 1999, but this is the first time that the World Heritage Centre will have a permanent presence (stand nr. 10.1/116) to provide information on its tourism programme and activities.

WH News Youth meets in Rhodes to discuss their cities' heritage
23 Oct 2003 - During the 7th International Symposium of the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC) in Rhodes, Greece (23-26 September) a Youth Forum was held within the framework of the UNESCO World Heritage in Young Hands Project . The forum was attended by 19 young people between 18 and 20 years of age, who met at the Marc de Montalembert Foundation in the heart of the medieval city of Rhodes.

WH News Tripling environmental protection plan for Madagascar
24 Sep 2003 - During the 2003 World Parks Congress in Durban, South Africa, HEM Marc Ravalomanana, the President of Madagascar announced an environmental protection plan that will triple the current protected area surface in Madagascar. Up to six million hectares of protected areas and new World Heritage serial sites are to be identified in Madagascar as part of the plan.

WH News Parks Congress looks at roles and risks of Park Rangers in DRC
22 Sep 2003 - During the 2003 World Parks Congress, Eulalie Bashige, Director General, ICCN, DRC gave a presentation on "Peace and Security: the Benefits of Protected Areas in the Democratic Republic of the Congo". In a related workshop on the management of protected areas in regions of conflict, participants highlighted the need to support park rangers and also called for a Draft Convention on the Prohibition of Hostile Military Activities in Protected Areas.

WH News UNESCO and the United Nations Foundation: Improving Management Effectiveness of World Heritage Sites
08 Sep 2003 - Twenty representatives from ten World Heritage Sites convened at a pre-World Parks Congress workshop on the shores of the Indian Ocean to jointly review progress on the implementation of the Enhancing our Heritage project. The project guides World Heritage Site managers through a process of assessing site values, identifying management targets, and monitoring on progress in achieving targets, with results feeding back into the planning process.

WH News Kotor, Srebarna and Yellowstone are Withdrawn from the List Of World Heritage In Danger
02 Jul 2003 - UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee, meeting since June 30 at Organization Headquarters under the chair of Vera Lacœuilhe of Saint Lucia, has withdrawn the following three sites from the List of World Heritage in Danger: the Srebarna Nature Reserve (Bulgaria), Yellowstone (USA) and the Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor (Serbia and Montenegro).

02 Jul 2003 - The cultural landscape and archaeological remains of the Bamiyan Valley and Ashur (Qal’at Sherqat) in Iraq were simultaneously inscribed on both World Heritage List and on List of World Heritage in Danger, during the 27th session of UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee.
