Celebration of the Ethiopian Millennium

    Ethiopia lives by the Julian calendar, which was introduced by Julius Caesar in 46 BC. It remained in use in some countries as a national calendar into the twentieth century but has generally been replaced by the Gregorian calendar. Ethiopia, one of the first Christian kingdoms in history that has kept the ancient temporal standard, celebrated its millennium on 12 September 2007.

    Several events will mark this week of celebrations which is inaugurated by the Director-General:

    17 December, Room I, 6-10.30 pm

    • Opening of the Contemporary Art Exhibition (16 stands: 9 artists, 4 photographers, 2 sculptors, 1 illustrator, handicrafts displays)
    • Traditional and Modern Fashion Show (first part) (7-7.30 pm)
    • Musical interlude (7.30-7.45 pm)
    • Fashion Show (second part) (7.45–8.15 pm)
    • Cocktail and buffet (8.15-10.30 pm)

    18 December, Room IV, 6-9.30 pm

    • Conference/debate: "Highlight on the Ethiopian and African prehistory, history and civilization: the historical time" (6-8pm)
    • Film screening: The Obelisk of the Discord by Laurent Védsrines (8-9 pm)
    • Debate in the presence of the director (9-9.30 pm)

    19 December, in front of Rooms X and XI and in Room XII

    • Film projections, cinema (4-5.30 pm)
    • Conference/debate, Room XII: "The Pan–Africanism and Ethiopia: from the nearest past to the present" (6-8 pm)
    • Film screening: Ethiopia Ambessa by Nicolas Barthez (Room XII, 8-9 pm)
    • Debate in the presence of the director (9-9.30 pm)

    20 December, Room IV

    • Conference/debate "Ethiopia at the threshold of the Third Millennium: the Present and the Future" (6-8 pm)
    • Film screenings: The Return of the Obelisk by Samson Giorgis and Menged by Daniel Taye Worku (8-9 pm)
    • Debate in the presence of the directors (9-9.30 pm)

    21 December: Fontenoy restaurant, 8 pm

    • Closing: Ethiopian buffet, dance evening, Ethiopian singers.
