Intercultural Dialogue through Music: Symposium and Concert

 (Paris - France)
From 26-11-2007   to   26-11-2007

    This international symposium addresses issues related to the dynamics of musical expression and production in the context of globalization. It is followed by a concert "Melody for Peace. Rossini, but not only…"

    Following the opening, the plenary is subdivided into three working groups, and the international experts focus on:

    • the dynamics of music and cultural expressions;
    • the impact of globalization (and commercialization) on music as a component of intangible cultural heritage; and
    • how music promotes communication

    The three groups then consider the recommendations and concluding remarks, possibly in the form of a declaration to be presented at an international conference on this subject in Boston (USA) in 2008.

    The symposium is followed by a concert "Melody for Peace. Rossini, but not only…" performed by The Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and a group of traditional artists from different registers and geo-cultural origins. This outstanding musical performance features the world premier of Melody for Peace, a work composed by Professor Antony Paul de Ritis of Northeastern University, Boston. This multi-cultural performance is to be repeated in New York on 3 December 2007 by the same group of traditional artists together with the Orchestra of St Luke’s, New York.

    The symposium and concert are organized by UNESCO, in cooperation with Northeastern University (Boston) and the Melody for Dialogue among Civilizations Association (MDACA).
