In 1973, the Director-General of UNESCO said that:

"Today there is scarcely any country in which public opinion is not alive to your problems and where goodwill is not expressed on every side. Saving Venice has become a cause of worldwide importance".

UNESCO and private committees make use of their special features to sensitize different types of public to Venice’s problems and needs, so as to find the resources necessary to achieve their objectives.

The fields of action are many and varied. Exhibitions, tours and symposia are organized; and much literature has been published on Venice and the work of safeguarding and conservation by UNESCO and private committees (See Report of private committees activities in 1999).

There have been constant efforts to obtain press coverage for the development of the campaign.

Generous donations for Venice stimulated by all these activities have resulted in a real improvement of the environment and the restoration of many buildings and works of art.
