Today’s global challenges are too great for one organization to tackle on its own: for this reason, there is a pressing need for partnerships that bring together international organizations, networks, and cooperation with the public and the private sectors. Increasing attention is being paid to enhance effectiveness of international cultural cooperation both at the global and country level.

UNESCO’s partners are diverse, ranging from governments, UN agencies and programmes to multinational companies and small and medium-sized enterprises, foundations. They are found worldwide, creating a powerful network of solidarity.

UNESCO’s cultural projects enjoy most fruitful public cooperation with a number of governments through the bilateral funds-in-trust. Other projects receive external assistance from the United Nations funds and programmes.

Funding and professional resources from the private sector can greatly enhance the scope and impact of UNESCO’s work. Such partnerships enable actors in the private sector to contribute to finding solution to global issues and fulfil their social corporate responsibilities.

In the academic field, the UNESCO/UNITWIN Chairs programme aims at developing inter-university partnerships, encouraging the transfer of knowledge between institutions of higher learning and promoting academic solidarity around the world.
