In Focus Considered a foremost cause of criminality in the world today, the illicit traffic of cultural property pervades all regions of our planet. The opening of borders, the increasing number of armed conflicts, poverty, and the exponential growth of the art market are some of the factors accounting for the fact that cultural objects are so avidly coveted. UNESCO and its partners continue to wage the battle against a scourge that undermines the very identity of peoples worldwide. News Other Events Just Published Desk Diary, 160 pages, spiral bound, 23 × 22 cm, 79 colour photographs Raconte-moi le Patrimoine vivant Documents UNESCO has just published the Compendium Witnesses to History edited by Professor Lyndel V. Prott. It is 438 pages of reliable information from some of the world’s leading experts in the field of return and restitution of cultural objects and it extends beyond the purely legal aspect. This report analyzes all aspects of cultural diversity, which has emerged as a key concern of the international community in recent decades, and maps out new approaches to monitoring and shaping the changes that are taking place. It highlights, in particular, the interrelated challenges of cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue and the way in which strong homogenizing forces are matched by persistent diversifying trends. The report proposes a series of ten policy-oriented recommendations, to the attention of States, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, international and regional bodies, national institutions and the private sector on how to invest in cultural diversity. The exhibition "Iraq: UNESCO post-conflict response" is organized by UNESCO Office of Baghdad in Amman in close cooperation with the Permanent Delegation of Iraq to UNESCO.
