Seminar on the Slave Trade and Slavery in West Africa 

This official event commemorates the Bicentenary Abolition of the Slave Trade in the former British colonies and will be attended by the UNESCO Director-General, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura. 

The objectives are:

  • To undertake the inventory, safeguarding and promotion of West African tangible and intangible cultural heritage related to the slave trade and slavery;
  • To define criteria for tourism itineraries within the West African region;
  • To enforce the network of West African museums related to slave trade and slavery.

The seminar will be attended by more than 30 participants including 15 experts from member states of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) and selected experts from the International Scientific Committee.
