Beyond Truth and Fiction: the Works of Akram Zaatari and Mohamad Soueid
From March 22-26 there will be a 5-day retrospective of works by these artists, at three venues (SEMAT, AUC and Townhouse Gallery) Programmed by the Film unit at the American University in Cairo, SEMAT - the Collective for Independent Filmmaking, and the Townhouse Gallery of Contemporary Art.

Nightfall1.jpg Mohamad Souied and Akram Zaatari are prominent figures in the independent film and video scene of Beirut, which they began shaping since the early 1990ís. Much of their works are distinguished by poetic, cinematic and critical responses to the civil war (1975-1992) and its aftermath, while also questioning the structures of cinematic viewing and meaning production normally assumed to distinguish between document and fiction. From March 22-26 there will be a 5-day retrospective of works by these artists, at three venues (SEMAT, AUC and Townhouse Gallery, *see below). Each venue will begin their screenings respectively, with filmmakers present, on March 22, March 23 and March 24, after which there will be ON-GOING screenings of their other films (see forthcoming program). This event will culminate with a Roundtable discussion at AUC on March 25 that will address the situation of independent filmmaking in the Middle East, with Akram Zaatari and Mohamad Soueid present. It will end with final screening on March 26, 7pm at Townhouse, followed by 9pm Electronic Sound Performance of Hassan Khan & Mahmoud Refat at the Blackbox Studio Theatre, 3rd Floor, AUC Falaki Campus, Falaki Street.
