Ms Zineb SEDIRA

French and Algerian Nationalities / lives in London

Bio
From Algerian parents, Zineb Sedira was born in Paris (France) in 1963. Since 1986, she is base in London.

Zineb Sedira work explores the ways in which her identity is informed by religion, culture, language, and gender. In her video piece, "Mother, Father and I," videos of her mother and father are projected onto one wall and a video of the artist herself is projected onto the opposite wall. She listens while her parents, who were both mujahedines, and freedom fighters, talk about why they decided to live in France. Another moving piece by Sedira is a series of photographs entitled "Mother, Daughter and I." The photographs show three generations of women talking to each other and reveals the cultural, linguistic and generational gaps between them.

The artist has exhibited widely across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Her work was recently shown as part of the Venice Biennale (2001) and has also been featured in exhibitions at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK (2002), Nikolaj Contemporary Art Center, Copenhagen, Denmark (2000), the Institute of Contemporary Art, London, UK (1998).
