Be creative - Roadrules for creators and mentors

Road Rules for Creators - Tips on Helping Yourself Be Creative:
This project asks students to become creators and artists. Here are some ideas to help you start thinking and behaving like an artist!

  • Keep a working journal: Your journal is a place for you to doodle, write and explore ideas. Visualize the art work you want to create. Try to picture it or hear it in your mind. What do you want people to take away from your art? Try to view it as it will appear when finished. Then you will have a clear idea of what you want to achieve.

  • Organize your project: It may surprise you, but ordering your art project helps you to be more creative. Organizing your project can mean thinking ahead about what you need to do to complete your project. Asking yourself questions like, What tools will I need?

Road Rules for Mentors - Tips on Creating an Artistic Environment:
This project asks teachers to become mentors and students to become artists. As a mentor, your job is to create an artistic environment in which students can feel free to explore the topic and tools at hand. Being a mentor is different from being a teacher. As a mentor, you let the students take ownership of their projects. At the same time you provide a clear structure within which they can work. Clearly explain the arts activity and how to use the tools:

  • Engage them in a thought experiment to get them in the mindframe of the project.

  • Make yourself available to them as a resource, but don’t instruct them unless they ask for help.

  • Express interest in their art, rather than judgment.

  • Ask thoughtful, open-ended questions rather than ones that can be answered by yes or no.
