Musicians in Burkina Faso launch Africa's first music cooperative

Musicians in Burkina Faso have agreed to launch Africa’s first musician’s cooperative designed to give members greater access to production facilities and distribution systems in order to gain wider diffusion of their music, raise incomes and ensure greater diversity of musical products in domestic and international markets.

The decision was taken at a meeting in Ougadougou, Burkina Faso, on the 4-5th October, at the offices of the Support Programme for Decentralised Cultural Initiatives (Programme de Soutien aux Initiatives Culturelles Décentraliées - PSIC) attended by members of the Union of Musical Artists (SYNAM), the Association of Young Musicians of Burkina (AJMB) and Mr. Vincent Seck, the Cultural Programme specialist at UNESCO's cluster office in Bamko. Madame KY Clotilde, consultant for the International Alliance Cooperative (Alliance Coopérative Internationale) and Mr. Desiré Ourdraogo, assistant of the PSIC, also attended the meeting.

Designed to respond to the specific needs of local musicians, Musicoop was launched following consultations between musicians which identified the most pressing needs of artists. The cooperative, provisionally named ‘Musicoop Burkina,’ will construct an instrument bank, a nationwide distribution network for CDs and videos and establish a small CD and cassette printing facility as well. It will also undertake initiatives to support the professionalisation of its members, contribute to efforts to develop fair contractual practices in the music industry’s labour market and organise concerts and tours on a regular basis
