Chevalier de Saint Georges (1745-1799)

Joseph Bologne Saint-George was born on Christmas Day, 1745 in Guadeloupe to a slave and a French colonialist, Saint-George grew up to be the first black man to conduct some of France’s most important orchestras. Saint-George was also one of France’s finest fencers, a famed lover, and a General who led an army of 1000 black soldiers in the French Revolution - unprecedented in European history.
