Proclamation of Masterpieces

Created by UNESCO in 1997, the Proclamation of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity is an international distinction. This program concluded in 2006 with the entry into force of the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The Proclamation program was in line with the Organisation’s endeavours at the international level for the promotion and safeguarding of cultural heritage. The Convention concerning the protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage adopted in 1972, exclusively protects tangible heritage. UNESCO wished to extend protection to intangible cultural heritage, fragile and perishable but essential for communities’ cultural identity.
