The European Commission Advocates Legislation on the Management of Copyright and Related Rights

 
April-June 2004

Following an in-depth analysis of the issue, the European Commission published on 19 April 2004 a Communication on the management of copyright and related rights in the Internal Market of the European Union. Since the 1990s, the European harmonization of copyright laws has become a critical issue. Seven Directives have already been adopted, the last one about the enforcement of intellectual property rights. Logically, the question of rights management at European level has arisen. Indeed, it has appeared necessary for the Commission to consider “whether current methods of rights management are hindering the functioning of the Internal Market, especially with the advent of the Information Society”.
