La Tejedora de Coronas (The weaver of crowns)

by Germán Espinosa (born in 1938)

Summary: Genoveva Alcocer, the weaver, a beautiful, passionate and lucid woman from Cartagena created by Espinosa, presents the traditional chain of events in reverse rather than as elements of universal history. Born around 1680, she lives to be almost 100 years old and participates in the significant historical events of the world, the metropolis and the colonies during the eighteenth century. A comprehensive novel, fictional, historical, a novel of characters, old-fashioned, gothic, modern, a philosophical essay, a history of ideas, a political and humanistic confrontation, a narrative of love and solitude, fable, legend, myth, characters who are purely literary, vivid and true to life, make up the intricate network of causalities which forms the backdrop to the historical facts.

Reason for the choice: Germán Espinosa’s book, La Tejedora de Coronas, is regarded as the most important, significant and successful Colombian novel of the past 20 years. It stands alongside the work of Gabriel García Márquez. In the literary world, it is considered to be one of the greatest works of Colombian literature.
