Triangular Trade

The slave trade gave rise to a trading circuit known as the triangular trade : the slave ships left Europe for Africa laden with merchandise to be exchanged for slaves who were then transported to America to be sold to the planters.

The income from these sales was then used to purchase tropical produce (coffee, cotton, sugar and so on) for marketing in Europe. The round trip took some eighteen months. In order to transport the greatest possible number of slaves, the ships’ steerage was frequently put to use. The slaves were packed in as can be seen from the accompanying plan.
