Transatlantic Slave Trade
The universal history of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade is outstanding for three reasons: its duration - some four centuries; the particular nature of its victims : black African men, women and children ; and its intellectual legitimization: the development of an anti-black ideology and its legal organization, the Code noir. |

As a business and an economic enterprise, the slave trade is a dramatic illustration of the meeting between history and geography. It involved several regions and continents: Africa, America, the Caribbean, Europe and the Indian Ocean. The history of this long-concealed tragedy, with its root causes, methods and consequences, has yet to be set down and given to the world. Such is the primary goal assigned to the "Slave Route" project by the UNESCO Member States. Its constituents are historical accuracy, human rights, development, peace, memory and intercultural dialogue.
