Rehabilitation of Regional Centre for the Conservation of the Cultural Property in the Arab Countries

The project consists in the physical rehabilitation and refurbishment of the Regional Centre for the Conservation of the Cultural Property in the Arab Countries. It was established during the 1970s with help from UNESCO.

The building is situated within the Sarai Quarter of Baghdad, opposite the Old Ottoman Administrative Complex, which occupies an important location in the northern part of Baghdad’s historic core, where many of the city’s cultural activities are to be found. It was operational and provided services to all Arab countries until last spring, when the looting which followed the conflict reduced it to an empty shell. Thieves took away all movable objects, (furniture, equipment and fixtures) and some immovable objects as well (wall panelling, tiles) and destroyed all its records. The structure of the building however is intact.

The work of the Centre will contribute to the preservation of the cultural property of the Arab countries and the promotion of knowledge in the fields of building preservation and maintenance by means of research, training and laboratory experiments.
