Due to the extensive and continuous looting at some archaeological sites, training site guards in efficient methods of protecting historical and archaeological sites is an urgent need in Iraq. The aim of the project was to provide a first training session to site guards and border patrols on: identification of sites at risk; listing of the risks; best and most efficient ways to protect the sites from risks; identification and handling of looted archaeological objects; international conventions and their application; security procedures at sites; specific tasks of the border patrols.

Medium-long term expected results:

  • Create a central control authority
  • Create a police corps specialized in fighting against illicit traffic with archaeological objects
  • Have a well trained and equipped corps of guards at sites
  • Establish control posts at sites.

From 25 September to 14 October 2004, the training was successfully carried out in Amman, Jordan. 51 Iraqi trainees participated in the workshop.
