PALATNIK

Mr Abraham PALATNIK

Natal (Brazil), 1928. Lives in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).

Bio
Palatinik studied in Tel Aviv in the forties, specializing in combustion engines at the Montefiori Technical School and at the Tel Aviv Institute of Art and Aesthetics. In 1948 he returned to Brazil and met the art critic Mario Pedrosa, who was to have a great influence on his future work.
In 1951 he made “Aparelho Cinecromático”, a mechanism projecting coloured lights onto a screen. A motor, previously programmed by Palatnik, controlled the movements and combination cycles of the lights. The work was shown at the First International São Paulo Biennial and won the international jury’s prize.
In the seventies he created “Aparelhos Cinéticos”, a series of kinetic works in which he showed the equipment behind the movement, like a breaking down of the “Aparelho Cinecromático”. International recognition came with exhibitions at the 32nd Venice Biennial; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; the Museum of Tel Aviv, amongst others.
In 2002 the Itaú Cultural Institute in São Paulo organized a retrospective of his work. Abraham Palatinik is one of the first Brazilian artists to use mechanical and electrical equipment to produce art.
