PAYNE

Mr Malcolm PAYNE

Pretoria (South Africa), 1946. Lives in Cape Town (South Africa). Video, Installation.

Bio
The central themes of Malcolm Payne’s work are the problems of contemporary society, mainly in Africa and more specifically in his own country, South Africa, such as ethnic prejudice, exploitation of workers and the monopoly of the laboratories that manufacture anti-AIDS drugs. For these he uses a range of very different forms of expression that include painting, sculpture, ceramics and, more recently, video and video installation.
Works such as his video “15 March 2001”, a kind of television announcement about intellectual property rights and anti-AIDS drugs in South Africa,
illustrate the strong political connotations of Payne’s artwork. His works have been shown at different electronic art exhibitions and festivals inside and outside South Africa such as the 46th Venice Biennial (1995); the 2nd Johannesburg Biennial (1997), the 16th World Wide Videofest, Amsterdam (1998); and “Global Conceptualism”, Queens Museum, New York, Miami Art Museum, Vancouver Art Gallery (1999/2000). In 2001 he presented his video installation “10 Canons of Stupidity” at the exhibition “New ideas, old tricks” at the hARTware Projekt Gallery in Dortmund, Germany. This work deals with issues of African culture and the relations between identity and the crisis of western culture.
Payne is a professor at the Michaelis School of Fine Art of the University of Cape Town.
