MTHETHWA

Mr Zwelethu MTHETHWA

Durban (South Africa), 1963. Lives in Cape Town (South Africa). Video, Installation.

Bio
After graduating in photography at the Michaelis School of Fine Arts, University of Cape Town (1985), Zwelethu Mthethwa obtained a Fullbright Grant to study at the Rochester Institute of Technology (US), where he obtained a Masters in Imaging Arts. He returned to Cape Town, South Africa, and lectured in photography and drawing at the Michaelis School of Fine Arts from 1994 to 1999. He is currently a research associate at the School.
The protagonists of his videos and photographs are immigrants from the rural areas of South Africa who live on the outskirts of Cape Town. With his work, Mthethwa aims to create awareness of the problems of these people, who live on the margins of society in a permanent struggle between the loss of their identity and the cultural resistance that is present in aspects such as their dress and the lively colours of their houses. His videos and video installations give us the histories of these people and their versions. One example is the video installation “Rebirth” (2000), in which three video projections show, in narrative form, a healing ritual in which elements from both tradition and modern life mingle.
Since 1985 collective and personal exhibitions have included the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg (1998) and the sample “Marco Noire Contemporary Art” shown in San Sebastian, Italy (1998), in Cologne, Germany (1999) and in Chicago (1999).
