Bio  
Mambety’s experimental cinema blends the narrative features of western cinema with those of the oral tales of traditional African culture. His short and full-length films deal with the political, social and cultural issues of Africa. His production began in the sixties with the short “Contra’s city” (1968).
His first full-length production in 16mm was “Badou Boy” (1970), a critical, humorous work on the city of Dakar, Senegal.
“Touki Bouki” (1973), his first full-length film in 35 mm, contains the same elements as his former works: non-professional actors, non-conventional camera movements and a non-linear narrative. Fragments of ideas or messages connect to generate the meaning of the story.
One significant work is “Le Franc” (1994), about the life of Marigo, a poor Senegalese musician who tries to change his life by playing the lottery. Marigo’s experiences as he seeks to make his dream come true are representative of his country’s society and culture. Social issues are also the central theme of “La Petite Vendeuse de Soleil” (1998), which depicts the life of a small handicapped girl, Sili Laam, who tries to conquer the macho world of street newspaper vendors.
