Bio
|
Esquivel studied architecture at Peru’s Universidad Pontificia Católica (1988-1989), photography at the Instituto Superior Tecnológico Antonio Gaudí and multimedia and graphic design at the EOS Instituto de Arte y Diseño, Lima (1997).
The minimalist image is characteristic of Iván Esquivel’s conceptual work, which is based on the idea that our lives are increasingly defined by technology. His work has been shown at the following festivals: “Videobrasil”, São Paulo (1998); “III Festival Internacional de Vídeo Arte Electrónica” (ATA-Festival), Universidad Ricardo Palma, Lima (1999); “Interférences”, Belfort, France (2000); “Media@terra2000”, Athens, Greece and “II Bienal Iberoamericana”, Lima, Peru (2000).
At the “20th Worldwide Video Festival” in Amsterdam (2003) Esquivel showed his “Video” (2003), a conceptual work in which a monitor displays the word “video” over different kinds of static typically affecting television appliances. At the same festival, in the section “Focus Latin America”, he showed the videos “Number” (1998), in which a sequence of binary codes represents the idea that spoken expression and language are directly connected with the globalization topic, and “RGB” (1998), a minimalist piece of video and sound feedback in which video is treated as a source of signs. This work was also shown at “WRO 03 -10th International Media Art Biennial” in Krakow, Poland (2003) in an anthology of Peru’s video art.
