Promoting Journalism Training Excellence in Africa

In collaboration with Rhodes University’s School of Journalism and Media Studies (South Africa) and the Ecole Supérieure de Journalisme de Lille (ESJ, Graduate School of Journalism in France), UNESCO has identified and catalogued up-to-date information on ninety-six journalism teaching institutions across the African continent, and set up crucial criteria and indicators for defining potential institutional excellence.
Promoting Journalism Training Excellence in AfricaThe final report on “Criteria and Indicators for Quality Journalism Training Institutions, and Potential Centres of Excellence in Africa” identifies twelve of the African journalism schools assessed as potential Centres of Excellence and nine as potential Centres of Reference. The report provides vital input data for building professional and institutional capacity for media training in Africa. The information on journalism institutions has been catalogued onto a database which will serve as a valuable resource for further development initiatives in this field.

The report provides detailed recommendations on the areas of possible partnership with both the Centres of Excellence and the Centres of Reference whereby UNESCO and other stakeholders, including donors and beneficiaries, can make informed decisions about its role in helping to realise the potential of these important African facilities.

This groundbreaking resource will incite a range of networking and other benefits that will strengthen the role of the Centres of Excellence as hubs that create links with the Centres of Reference, to provide a positive impact on the sector as a whole.
