Socio-linguistic context – description The Akie people of Northern Tanzania live in small groups amongst the Maasai, with whom they have close contacts, and whose language they speak. Their original language, also called Akie, is closely related to the language spoken by the people who live in Kenyan’s Rift Valley.
The Akie have lost identity as a group. They have dissolved into separate groups, and ethnic solidarity is now addressed towards other societies. The Akie language is in the process of being replaced by Maasai and/or Swahili. In 1981 it was reported that younger Akie people are less fluent in Akie and more fluent in Maasai and/or Swahili. At present, probably most of Akie people speak Maasai.

It is difficult to determinate the number of Akie speakers because of various factors:
- no official figures available;
- variations in habitat (village vs. bush);
- variations in language affiliation (Akie/Maasai vs. Akie) and
- limited knowledge about the geographical distribution of speakers.
