Small Member States have specific needs and expectations that the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) should address. This is the main conclusion drawn by the European Small Member States (Monaco, Andorra, San Marin, Iceland and Luxemburg) who met at UNESCO on 16 January to draft a specific Declaration prior to the holding of the second meeting of the Summit Preparatory Committee (Prepcom II, 17-28 February 2003).
From the defence of their cultural specificities to the threats their domain names have to face, from the opportunity to use Small States as laboratories on Internet trends to the reinforcement of cooperation between these States and others, several specific issues have been addressed and will be described in the final Declaration soon to be published. Furthermore, participants reaffirmed the importance of the issues UNESCO promotes as essential for the Summit, especially with respect to cultural diversity and answering educational needs.
Raising the attention of nations to the defence of their specific needs and expectations, and more particularly their geographical and regional specificities is one the main stakes of the Summit preparation. The official conclusions of the recently ended Asian preparatory meeting for the WSIS (Tokyo, Japan, 13-15 January 2003) should soon be available. Related themes/countries
