Online Discussion Forum for WSIS to End 15 January
13-01-2003 ()
More than 280 participants have registered on the online discussion forum launched by UNESCO for Non-governmental Organizations and civil society at http://wsisforum.unesco.org to discuss their inputs to the final Declaration of Principles and Plan of Action to be adopted by the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in December 2003, in Geneva, Switzerland.
The forum is scheduled to end on 15 January and final contributions should be posted before this date. Ranging from the importance of universal and inclusive access to the Information Society to the right to information, from the use of ICTs for local communities to the technical implementation of multimedia centres, a variety of issues has been raised through eight thematic forums entitled: General Discussion, Access, Development and Empowerment, Content Issues, Education, Training and Research, Rights, Future Developments of Information Technologies, Civil Society in the WSIS and Beyond.
Contributions from the forum, reflecting civil society’s views of the Summit’s fundamental issues and challenges as well as their expectations with respect to rules and procedures for participation, will be collated in a final report to be sent to the WSIS Executive Secretariat for submission to the second meeting of the Summit Preparatory Committee (Prepcom II, 17-28 February 2003).
