Report of Symposium “Freedom of expression in the Information Society” Now Available

19-12-2002 ()
A true information society must guarantee freedom of expression and in particular freedom of the press and the media. This is one of the main conclusions of the final report of the Symposium on “Freedom of Expression in the Information Society” (Paris, France, 15-16/11/2002) that is now available in English and in French.
The final report of the event, that was organized by the French National Commission for UNESCO in cooperation with the UNESCO Secretariat at the Organization’s headquarters, includes a résumé of the key conclusions made by the participants.

At the symposium, many aspects of freedom of expression and its relationship to the information society were discussed, for example the challenges of participation and inclusion to possible forms of international co-operation. What are the opportunities in terms of citizenship, democracy and creativity but also the dangers and restrictions that threaten the freedom of expression in the information society? What about the means of regulation? Etc. The report that aims at being a basis for further debate reflects the totality of the discussions.
