South Asian Youth Representatives Discuss Information Society

Today starts in the Indian capital New Delhi a Conference entitled "Youth in the Contemporary Information Society - Needs, Role and Policies". Organized by UNESCO and the South Asia Foundation, the conference gathers representatives of youth NGOs and youth policy makers from countries of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).
The Conference, yet another example of UNESCO's efforts in ensuring the development of an inclusive Information Society runs from 22 to 24 November with the participation of international observers and representatives of UN Agencies and the World Bank in addition to youth delegates from the seven SAARC countries Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka)

The meeting seeks to assess conditions affecting the development of the information society in the region, establish information networks and partnerships among youth movements for the sharing of experiences as well as facilitate the incorporating and updating of national policies on youth issues. Other expected outcomes include the identification of ICT training needs, the establishment of required training structures and the dissemination of HIV/AIDS preventive information.

The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) was established when its Charter was formally adopted on December 8, 1985 by the Heads of State or Government of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka
