More than twenty experts in teacher education gained new insights in curriculum planning and expanded their understanding of course design thanks to a workshop organized by UNESCO’s Bangkok and Jakarta Offices. The event took place in the framework of the Next Generation of Teachers Project to help universities and teacher training centres develop curricula that best support their ICT training needs.
The five-day Curriculum Development Workshop took place from 27 September to 1 October 2010 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Participants were guided by a UNESCO resource person to map their existing ICT-related courses and to review them against the provided framework. They either revised a course or developed a new one by designing all aspects of it: contents, learning activities, pedagogical approaches and assessment.

Rounds of discussions raised the participants’ attention to the importance of having a clear scope of the content in relation to the objectives of the course. “This training helped our teacher training centre to design ICT integration into curricula for teachers of all subjects,” noted one of the participants. Another enriching aspect of the workshop was the opportunity it offered to the representatives of different institutions to gather together and exchange experiences and ideas.

UNESCO’s Bangkok Office will continue to work with the teacher training centres that will adopt the revised courses designed at the workshop, in order to ensure their progress and the empowerment of the next generation of teachers in Indonesia.

The development of teacher training curricula is, with no doubt, the most important aspect of capacity building of pre- and in-service educators. The Curriculum Development Workshop in Jakarta was organized as part of the Next Generation of Teachers Project, implemented by UNESCO’s Office in Bangkok with support from the Japanese government. The Project aims to build the capacity of teacher education institutions in designing and providing training on ICT integration to the next generation of teachers in Asia and the Pacific. The overall goal of the project is to enhance teaching and learning through the use of ICT in classrooms.
