Taking stock: Gender, media, diversity and change
UNESCO will participate in the fourth Gender and Media Summit, organized by Gender Links in Johannesburg (South Africa) from 13 to 15 October 2010. The main objectives of this event are to review the progress made over the last years regarding gender and media in Southern Africa, to share good practices and to discuss effective strategies based on the conclusions drawn from the previous achievements.

UNESCO will participate in the fourth Gender and Media Summit, organized by Gender Links in Johannesburg (South Africa) from 13 to 15 October 2010. The main objectives of this event are to review the progress made over the last years regarding gender and media in Southern Africa, to share good practices and to discuss effective strategies based on the conclusions drawn from the previous achievements.
The Summit will also serve as a forum of exchange and discussion for developing partnerships and synergies among the participants. It will include several working groups on different topics, such as media regulation, media practice, training and activism, gender in media houses and citizen participation.

The event will bring together the members of the Gender and Media Southern Africa (GEMSA) Network, media practitioners, decision makers, trainers, gender activists, as well as academics and researchers from different institutions. UNESCO is funding the participation of Namibian media houses, in the framework of the MDG-F project, “Setting things right towards gender equality and equity in Namibia”.

A highlight of the Summit will be the Gender and Media Awards on 15 October. Over 180 award entries were received in 20 categories, including print, radio and television. Three groups of judges under the leadership of Mercedes Sayagues, journalist and independent media consultant, assessed the submissions. After a thorough negotiation, the judges awarded nine winners and six runners-up.

The Awards will feature the formal launch of the much awaited Gender and Media Progress Study (GMPS), a follow up to the 2003 Gender and Media Baseline Study. GMPS is the most comprehensive regional study on gender in the media, featuring new chapters on general media practice, coverage of HIV and AIDS, and gender violence.

UNESCO, together with other UN agencies in Namibia, is working towards protecting the rights of women and girls through sensitisation and awareness on key gender inequalities, the promotion of gender mainstreaming, and the realization of the Millennium Development Goal 3 on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
