A selection of high resolution photographs of some of the treasured items listed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register, as well as other properties from projects that have been implemented under the Memory of the World Programme, will be exhibited from 8 September to 28 October around the railings of UNESCO's Fontenoy Building in Paris, France.
The exhibition will feature photographs and short descriptions of a wide range of items that form part of the documentary heritage, including the arrest warrant for Nelson Mandela (the world's most famous prisoner), Islamic medical manuscripts, ancient maps, the Bayeux Tapestry and precious archives from institutions around the world.

The Memory of the World Programme was established to reduce collective amnesia by preserving valuable archive holdings and library collections as well as by ensuring their wide dissemination. In this context, it undertakes promotional activities that are intended to raise consciousness among the general public and decision-makers of the need to preserve the world's documentary heritage.

This international initiative was launched by UNESCO in 1992 to protect the millions of valuable textual, print, audiovisual and electronic documents that libraries, archives and museums strive to preserve, in a race against time. A number of international, regional and national projects have been implemented in the succeeding years to provide access to endangered collections. These have focused on conservation or digitization, awareness-raising and training activities to reinforce the Programme.

The Memory of the World Register lists documentary heritage which has been identified by the International Advisory Committee and endorsed by the Director-General of UNESCO as corresponding to selection criteria for world significance.
