A training workshop for journalism teachers and media professionals will take place from 19 to 23 January 2009 at the Institut supérieur de l’information et de la communication (ISIC) in Rabat, Morocco. It will focus on newspaper design in Arabic.
Within the framework of UNESCO’s action to reinforce professional and institutional capacities of training institutions, ISIC was identified as a potential centre of excellence in journalism training in Africa. However, some recommendations were made about the needs of the Institute, in particular concerning the professionalization of teaching practices and the organization by ISIC of professional training workshops.

In view of these recommendations, UNESCO’s Office in Rabat, in cooperation with the World Association of Newspapers, organizes a training course on newspaper design for teachers and media professionals from the Moroccan newspaper industry. The training will focus on the connection between newspaper design and editing. The participants will learn specific software used to design newspapers in Arabic and study the best practices in the Arab region.

This training is a result of the Consultation Meeting on Capacity Building for Potential Centres of Excellence in Journalism Training in Africa, which took place in March 2008 at the Rhodes University (Grahamstown, South Africa). During this consultation, the World Association of Newspapers showed the interest to cooperate with UNESCO in strengthening the capacities of media professionals in the Maghreb countries. Through this cooperation, the UNESCO Office in Rabat expects to contribute to reinforcement of the professional skills of the written media in Morocco.
