UNESCO Office in Montevideo has released a guidebook for parents and educators on the use of personal computer with the aim to strengthen cooperation and the exchange of information between schools and families.
The book entitled CEIBAL en la sociedad del siglo XXI: Referencias para Padres y Educadores (CEIBAL in the society of XXIst century: References for Parents and Educators) was published under the CEIBAL project supported by UNESCO. This project aims at providing all primary school pupils in Uruguay with a notebook to be used both at school and at home.

The CEIBAL project, which is financed by the Presidency of Uruguay, is being implemented in cooperation with several national institutions, United Nations Country Team (UNCT) and UNESCO. The project aims to provide 350,000 computers with Internet connection to all primary school pupils in Uruguay by the end of 2009. Since 2007, when the first phase of the project started, 100,000 notebooks have been distributed and connected to the Internet. Primary schools in rural areas were connected first, the schools in the capital Montevideo were equipped afterwards.

Parents are invited to use the computer with its Internet access for formal and non-formal education programmes, e-governance, etc. To design the interaction between school and home the CEIBAL project organises a participative process in support for state reform and modernisation through interactive media and digital inclusion.

In this context, this guidebook for parents and educators is aimed to obtain benefits at home from the personal computer provided by the school. The intention is to strengthen cooperation and the exchange of information between schools and families. The book provides parents with the list of websites with practical and relevant information related to vocational training, work, distance education and health. It also informs about the risks of communication networks for youth and adults. In addition, the guide addresses issues of safety and security for all family members.

The access to information and knowledge is changing. Being able to handle the electronic knowledge is becoming increasingly important in our daily lives. What the search engines have not registered on the web today is not perceived, and tomorrow simply will not exist. Therefore, information literacy in a digital world is as important as reading and writing.
