Utilizing open source technology to make learning material development a less timely and costly process is the objective of a cooperation agreement established between UNESCO and the Global Educational Learning Community (CURRIKI).
A Memorandum of Understanding establishing the terms of the cooperation between UNESCO and CURRIKI was signed on 8 October 2007 at UNESCO Headquarets in Paris, France by UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, Abdul Waheed Khan and CURRIKI’s Executive Director Barbara Kurshan.
UNESCO and CURRIKI will cooperate in the field of ICT and education and undertake a variety of activities in support of the common objectives of the UNESCO’s Communication and Information, Education and Science sectors and CURRIKI’s education, science and community programmes. Areas covered by the cooperation include: Both Organizations will join forces to utilize open source technology towards making learning material development a less timely and less costly process for developing countries, with the added benefit of making the open source content more indigenous. Curriki is an online environment created to support the development and free distribution of world-class educational materials to anyone who needs them. Their name is a play on the combination of 'curriculum' and 'wiki' which is the technology we're using to make education universally accessible. Curriki is the result of work done for GELC -the Global Education and Learning Community- an online project started by Sun Microsystems to develop works for education in a collaborative effort. The leadership team consists of people with a long-time commitment to exploring the use of technology to improve education. Related themes/countries
