IAMCR's 50th Anniversary Conference opens today at UNESCO Headquarters
UNESCO and the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) are co-organizing the IAMCR’s 50th Anniversary Conference from 23 to 25 July 2007 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France. The Conference theme is “Media, Communication, Information: Celebrating 50 Years of Theories and Practices”.
These last fifty years have seen a number of theoretical evolutions and practical advances in the domains which relate media to information and communication. Issues such as internet governance and co-regulation of the media resonate with questions on cultural diversities.

The modifications of the market in the context of globalization have cast in new perspectives such issues as cultural goods, e-learning industries, and media literacy.

In celebration of this anniversary, the IAMCR 2007 Conference will try to reflect these tendencies and to test how they intersect with more classical thematic strands such as media history, political communication, political economy, participatory communication, media education, information and ICT policy, etc.
Sections and working groups will analyze innovative connections between theory and practice, and evaluate new original methodologies, protocols, instruments and indicators. Perspectives and trends for the future will also be delineated, so as to provide new paths for investigation by IAMCR members in the next 50 years.

UNESCO has provided USD 17,500 to support the Conference. Four reports are being prepared on:
  • Communication for Development;
  • Information Literacy;
  • Ethical Dimensions of the Information Society; and
  • Communication Strategies for HIV and AIDS.
