Workshop on press freedom in Ethiopia
11-05-2007 (Addis Ababa)
Strong solidarity with journalists and media professionals worldwide that have been killed and imprisoned; was expressed by the participants of a workshop organized on 3 May in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to celebrate World Press Freedom Day 2007.
The participants who gathered in Addis Ababa Hilton Hotel also urged the government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to adhere, through legislations, policy and practice, to Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 29 of the constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and to facilitate and invest in training and capacity building of journalists and media practitioners.
Journalists and media practitioners both from private and state-owned media should engage themselves in a process to come up with a code of conduct and create a self-regulatory press council, said the participants who also called for the creation of a platform for the press to interact within itself and with the government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia including reviewing the draft press and broadcast laws.
The event was jointly organized by the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC), Horn of Africa Press Institute (HAPI) with the support of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), UNESCO and the UN Country Team for Ethiopia.
