UNESCO High Level Group of Visionaries on Knowledge Acquisition and Sharing

UNESCO is inviting a group of world known high level visionaries and decision makers from government, civil society, academia and the private sector to a high level dialogue on the future of knowledge acquisition and sharing on 23 June 2007 in Kronberg/Taunus, Germany.
Background

Knowledge is key to social and economic development. Its acquisition and sharing – in short: learning – go through dramatic changes because of rapidly emerging new communication and information technologies and the societal transformations that they generate.

But what are the long-term strategies to efficiently harness the enormous potential of new communication and information processes and technologies for developing new approaches to knowledge acquisition and sharing?

What needs to be done to effectively integrate these strategies into forward looking and sustainable policy making?

How can we harness the potential of ICTs to develop knowledge societies that are people-centred, inclusive and development oriented?

About the meeting

UNESCO invites a group of world known high level visionaries and decision makers from government, civil society, academia and the private sector to commence a high level dialogue on these questions.

Objectives

The members of this High-level Group of Visionaries will anticipate and define future needs and processes of knowledge acquisition and sharing and examine the relationship between these processes and knowledge creation, knowledge preservation, knowledge utilization, technology use and new knowledge models. They will address issues such as:
  • the role of knowledge acquisition and sharing to build a world in which peace, development and human rights prosper;

  • the contribution of ICTs to this process;

  • the evolution of knowledge acquisition and sharing over the next three decades;

  • political and institutional changes that are needed to address these challenges.
Outcomes

The High Level Group of Visionaries is expected to set the scene, identify issues, outline structures for addressing the issues, and define further steps. The primary outcome is a statement on the “Future of Knowledge Acquisition and Sharing” for worldwide dissemination.

The High Level Group will meet for a informal “seminar” on Saturday, 23 June 2007, in Kronberg/Taunis, Germany, in a high-end and both stimulating and relaxing retreat environment.

The event is organized by UNESCO’s Communication and Information Sector and the German Commission for UNESCO. It is sponsored by BASF.
