UNESCO supported documentary on the illegal trafficking of women, that raises awareness about the dramatic consequences of women trafficking in the Balkans, has just been released by Eurovision News Exchange Project (ERNO).
Through its support UNESCO envisages to enhance broadcasters' cooperation in South East Europe.

From Bosnia and Herzegovina to Montenegro, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania and even Western Europe, many girls caught up in human trafficking end up forced into prostitution. Eight feature TV news stories of a duration ranging from 5 to 15 minutes were produced by ERNO this year. Through interviews with trafficking victims and their family members, customs police, NGO workers, and smugglers, the stories uncover issues such as the profiling of victims, trafficking routes and the lack of prevention strategies. The reporters identified domestic violence and poverty among the main causes of the trafficking. The news stories highlight how internal smuggling in the region is on the rise and have most likely contributed to raising awareness on women trafficking among potential victims.

ERNO is a news exchange network of 12 public broadcasters from the Balkans and other South-Eastern European countries that was launched in December 2003 in order to strengthen cooperation, reconciliation and peace in the region. It has received support from UNESCO to initiate dialogue among journalists and professional investigative reporting through co-production.

In 2004 and 2005, ERNO was instrumental in the production and exchange, on a daily basis via satellite, of more than 1000 news items per year. During 2005, the ERNO network enlarged its focus from news items to include the exchange of feature and current affairs programmes.
